History of Golden Temple


        GOLDEN TEMPLE is also known as Sri Harmandir Sahab and Sri Darbar Sahab.
Golden Temple|| History|| 1574-present
Akbar, a Mughal emperor gifted the site to Bibi Bhani, a daughter of third Guru Amar Das Ji, as a wedding gift when she married Jetha who later became Fourth Guru Ram Das Ji.
1577-present|| Guru Ram Das Ji began the excavation of a fresh water tank, and construction of temple site.
1588-present|| Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the son of Guru Ram Das Ji and the fifth Guru of the Sikhs, supervised the laying of temple's foundation by Sain Miam Mir.
1604-present|| Guru Arjan Dev ji compiled the Sacred Scripture 'Adi Granth' over a five year period and appointed a Sikh named Baba Budda Ji to be the caretaker of the Granth. 
1663-present || Guru Har Gobind Ji laid the foundation of Akal Takhat, throne of spiritual authority, with the assistance of Bhai Gurdas Ji and Baba Budda Ji.
1699-1737-present|| Bhai Mani Singh Ji was appointed as curator of Harmandir Sahib by Guru Gobind Singh Ji ,who is the tenth Guru of the Sikhs.
1757-1762-present || Jahan Khan, an Afgani general of the invaader Ahmad Shah Abdali, attacked the temple. It was defended by illustrious martyr Baba Deep Singh Ji.The Sikhs and the Afgans clashed in the Battle of Amritsar on 13 November 1757 and in ensuring conflict Baba Deep Singh Ji was decapitated. Baba Deep Singh Ji continued to fight after having completely decapitated, slaying hie enemies with his head in one hand and his sword in the other. In this version, only upon reaching the sacred city of Amritsar did he stop and finally die.
1764-present|| The temple was finally rebuilt in its current shape & structure. Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia laid the foundation.
1776-present|| The construction of The Sarovar, Main Darbar Bridge, and the Darshini Deorhi was completed.
1784-present|| The Parikrama- the perimeter path area around the holy water (Sarovar) was completed.
1802-present|| Maharaja Ranjit Singh occupied the teritory of Amritsar.
1830-present|| He sponsored marble inlay, gold plating, and gliding of the temple.
1839-present|| Maharaja Ranjit Singh visited the Darbar Sahib for the last time.
